Campbell saw service as a Lance Corporal, later Acting Warrant Officer Class 2 (No. G/1489) with the Middlesex Regiment on the Western Front from 27th December 1914 and would be awarded the Military Medal in the London Gazette of 25th September 1917, this gazette covers awards for the opening actions of the Third Battle of Ypres including Pilckem Ridge on 31st July 1917 – the first day of the Battle of the Third Battle of Ypres.
