Great War Passchendaele Military Medal group awarded to later Prisoner of War Private E. Edgerton, 3rd/5th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers who saw service on the Western Front being awarded the Military Medal in the London Gazette of 14th January 1918 for gallantry at Passchendaele during the Third Battle of Ypres. Later transferring to 2/7th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, he would be taken Prisoner of War at Hagicourt on 21st March 1918 – the first day of the German Spring Offensive.

Ernest Edgerton was born in Heywood, Lancashire in 1880. He would see service as a Private (No. 201278) with the 3rd/5th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers on the Western Front , the battalion taking part in heavy fighting at Passchendaele as part of the Third Battle of Ypres. Edgerton would be awarded the Military Medal in the London Gazette of 14th January 1918 for gallantry during the battle.
However, the 3rd/5th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers would suffer such heavy casualties in the battle that it would soon be disbanded. Edgerton would then transfer to the 2/7th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers and was captured and taken prisoner of war at Hargicourt on 21st March 1918, the first day of the German Spring Offensive, later being repatriated after the end of the war and discharged on 16th February 1919. He married his fiancé Bertha Delon in 1920 and died in Bury on 30th July 1941.
