Fred Wilson Sugden was born at Barmoldswick, Manchester on 25th February 1897 and giving his trade as a weaver at a cotton mill joined the Royal Navy for the duration of hostilities on 14th April 1916 initially serving as an Ordinary Seaman with Vivid I until on 27th June 1916 he joined Blake until 7th October 1916 when he would transfer to the battleship HMS Erin, being promoted Able Seaman on 1st March 1917 before leaving the ship on 12th March 1917. He would move back to Blake from 13th March 1917 until 12th April 1918 when he joined Hecla. He would leave Hecla on 20th December 1918 with his final posting being aboard Vivid II from 21st December 1918 until 19th February 1919 when he was demobilised ashore.
