Thomas Mason Brough was born in Bromfield, Cumberland and lived in Aspatria, Cumberland and saw service as a Private (No. 202879) with the 4th and 11th (Lonsdale) Battalions, Border Regiment on the Western Front during the Great War. He was killed in action on 2nd December 1917 and is now remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial. He is noted as the son of Rachel Brough of Beech Hill, Aspatria, Cumberland and the late John Brough.
The night of 2nd December 1917 saw an attack on German positions around Vat Cottage Ridge on the Passchendaele Ridge, where four companies of 11th Border Regiment silently entered no man’s land, but were unable to achieve surprise as heavy fire and large numbers of magnesium flares swept across them. They did however manage to advance 500 yards with heavy casualties whilst confusion reigned, occupying a line 200 yards short of the objective.
