Great War Memorial Plaque awarded to Private Sydney Ebden, 10th (Service) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment who initially landed in France on 22nd September 1915 before transferring to Salonika where he died of wounds on 8th March 1917, now being buried in Karasouli Military Cemetery.

Sydney Ebden and was born in Dulwich, Kent and enlisted at Deptford, Kent having previously been educated at Sandhurst Road London County Council School. He would enlist on 9th September 1914 and saw service as a Private (11782) with the 10th (Service) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment on the Western Front from 22nd September 1915 before he was swiftly transferred in November 1915 along with the rest of his battalion to Salonika where later he died of wounds on 8th March 1917 now being buried in Karasouli Military Cemetery.
His officer wrote ‘He was a most plucky boy. His loss is keenly felt by all in the platoon, and not least by myself, as he was a good example by his courage and cheerfulness.’
