Sydney Thomas Clappen was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire and saw service as a Private (No. 25143) with the Gloucestershire Regiment and later as a Private (No. 33491) with the Devon Regiment and was killed in action on 23rd August 1917 with the 9th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment being buried in Bucquoy Road Cemetery, Ficheux and is noted as the son of Henry Charles and Annie Clappen of 41A Sun Street, Cheltenham.
A local newspaper reported ‘killed abroad by an accidental explosion of a bomb. He had previously been invalided home with frozen feet. He was formerly on the ‘Echo’ publishing staff. His home was at 41a Sun Street, Cheltenham.’
