Great War casualty Mons Trio to Private W.R. Holland, 9th Battalion, London Regiment, later Captain W.R. Holland, 1/8th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment who saw service on the Western Front from 4th November 1914 being wounded in the face during the attack on Hill 60 on 19th April 1915. After his recovery he would apply for a commission and on 28th July 1915 he was commissioned into the 4th/8th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment being posted back to France on 12th November 1915 where he would serve with the 1/8th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment, and whilst in the trenches at Hebuterne he received a shrapnel wound to his hand on 28th June 1916. After recuperating back in England, he would return to France on 27th October 1916 and joined the Machine Gun Corps.

William Raymond Holland was born on 30th March 1888 and educated at Latymer Upper School before he enlisted into the 9th Battalion, London Regiment on 31st August 1914 having previously been employed as a Bank Cashier, and after training he was posted to France with his battalion from 4th November 1914, subsequently serving as a machine gunner.
On the 19th April 1915, the machine-gun crew was pushed forward to support the 13th Brigade attack on Hill 60, with Holland being wounded in the face in this action.
On the 23rd April 1915 he was posted back to England having been in hospital in Boulogne, after recovering from his wounds he applied for a commission and on the 28th July 1915 he was commissioned into the 4/8th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment being posted back to France on 12th November 1915 where he would serve with the 1st/8th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment who was serving with 56th London Division alongside his old regiment. Whilst in the trenches at Hebuterne he received a shrapnel wound to his hand on 28th June 1916 a few days before the Division attacked Gommecourt on the 1st July 1916. After recuperating back in England, he was posted back to France on 27th October 1916 and joined the Machine Gun Corps.
