Herbert Champness was a resident of Stepney and enlisted in London before he saw service as a Private (No. 6095, later No. 323087) with the 1st 6th (City of London) Battalion (Rifles) and was killed in action on 30th November 1917 during the fighting at Cambrai. Having no known grave he is now remembered on the Cambrai Memorial.
