Ernest Gillespie Downing was the son of Clifford Young Downing and Florence Beatrice Downing, of Purnea, Behar, India, and having been commissioned into the British Army, then saw service during the Great War as a 2nd Lieutenant later Lieutenant with the 4th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers - the City of London Regiment. Downing was present out on the Western Front from 15th August 1915, and was killed in action during the Battle of Arras on 3rd May 1917. Having no known grave, he is commemorated by name on the Arras Memorial.
