Edward M. Cook was born in Kensington, Middlesex, enlisted on 14th January 1913 and saw service as a Private (No. 9941) with the 3rd Battalion, Coldstream Guards on the Western Front from 11th September 1914, and was noted as wounded in the War Office Casualty List of 5th May 1915 He would later be noted as a deserter on 7th August 1918 a note appearing in the Police Gazette before later being confirmed as having rejoined his unit on 17th September 1918.
