Great War 1914 Prisoner of War and July 1947 died in service General Service Medal 1918-1962, GVI 1st type bust, 1 Clasp: Palestine, awarded to Private R. McMartin, King’s Own Scottish Borderers, who was a pre-war Great War regular soldier who then saw service out on the Western Front from 15th August 1914 before being taken prisoner of war. Having then gone on to see service during the inter-war years and been present in Palestine during the Arab Rebellion, and having seen service during the Second World War was still apparently in service with the King’s Own Scottish Borderers when he died on 6th July 1947.

Robert McMartin was a pre-war regular soldier who originally saw service during the Great War as a Private (No.8385 later No.48669 and then No.3179213) with the King’s Own Scottish Borderers, being present out on the Western Front with the British Expeditionary Force from 15th August 1914, being taken prisoner of war. He claimed the Clasp and Roses to the 1914 Star in December 1921.

McMartin then went on to see service during the inter-war years and was present in Palestine during the Arab Rebellion, and having seen service during the Second World War was still apparently in service with the King’s Own Scottish Borderers when he died on 6th July 1947, being buried in Edinburgh (Corstorphine Hill) Cemetery. Aged 60 at the time of his death, he was the son of John and Mary McMartin of Laurieston, Falkirk, Stirlingshire.
