Charles McEwan was born in Leith, Midlothian, Scotland, and having worked as a saddler, then attested for service with the British Army at Edinburgh on 26th April 1907, joining as a Private (No.459 later No.389403) the 2nd Royal Dragoons - the Scots Greys. McEwan saw service during the Great War as a Corporal later Saddler Sergeant out on the Western Front from 17th August 1914, and having seen service out in India from January 1923, as a Warrant Officer 2nd Class and Saddler Quartermaster Sergeant was awarded the Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in Army Orders No.136 of 1926. He had claimed the Clasp and Roses to the 1914 Star in May 1920. McEwan was discharged at Canterbury on 26th January 1929.
