James Hughes enlisted on 8th February 1908 and saw service as a Private and later Acting Corporal (No. 11529, No. 40051) with the Worcestershire Regiment and later Devon Regiment on the Western Front from 17th December 1915 and would be admitted to hospital suffering from Nephritis on 30th March 1916. He would later be discharged due to sickness on 16th February 1919.
