Great Britain: An impressive 1914 Propaganda Iron Cross Medal, produced in crudely cast iron, and measuring 45 mm across, the obverse has the Imperial German Crown, the letter ‘W’ for Kaiser Wilhelm, and the date ‘1914’. The reverse is plain but has what appears to be a makers mark consisting of the letters ‘RD’ within a diamond. The suspension loop is affixed to an old frayed ribbon representing that of the Iron Cross 2nd Class.
Condition: Good Very Fine.
In 1914, the Allies, principally Great Britain produced spoof cast-iron crosses to mock Germany. Created to counter the prestige of the German Iron Cross, these satirical pieces served as anti-German propaganda, exploiting reported atrocities in Belgium and France to raise charity funds for the war effort.
