Germany - Third Reich: Wehrmacht Officer’s single shoulder strap for a Pioneer / Engineer Company Grade Officer with the rank of Hauptmann (Captain) in Pionier Bataillon 45. Comprising soutache braid commonly referred to as Russia braid mounted on black wool backing, with two gilt wash rank pips affixed, together with the gilt wash number ’45’ which is believed to indicate Pionier Bataillon 45, which as part of the 6th Army, and as such fought in the Battle of Stalingrad in the fight for the Tractor Factory when they deployed flamethrowers. This battalion was destroyed in Stalingrad but reconstituted later.
