Germany - Third Reich: Luftwaffe AK39 Wrist Compass, 2nd pattern Fl. 23235-1 marked, as used by various German pilots and crew members. Black bakelite form, base clearly marked with pattern label within the clear face, and numbered: ‘3027273’, and addition faint scratched letters - most probably being the owners name, with 360 markings on the outward face, usual air bubble within the liquid, and still in working order. Complete with original wrist strap.
Condition: one bearing sight now missing to face, some evidence of use, overall a fair example of type.
The AK39 Wrist Compass was designed for wear by pilots and crew for correctly calculating their position if forced to bail out or after a crash. Though it was designed to be worn on the wrist, it was commonly attached to various other pieces of equipment (zipper, straps, etc.).
