Description:

An unusual Civilian Award of the War Merit Cross 2nd Class with Bronze awarded to Nursery School Teacher Johanna Schneider, a resident of Berlin Friedenau for reasons associated with enemy air raids on Berlin

A War Merit Cross 2nd Class with Swords, an early bronze striking, with a rare preliminary certificate for the award, the text of which translates as follows: ‘Nursery School Teacher Johanna Schneider of Berlin-Friedenau was awarded the War Merit Cross 2nd Class with Swords for reasons of particular merit with air attacks and handed over in the summary proceedings on 21.6.1944. original award certificate follows after completion.’ Berlin, 21.6.1944 – Police – Schoneberg Sector.

An unusual civilian award issued by the local Police force, this was likely for an action during one of the many small scale Mosquito air-raids that took place on Berlin, during May and June 1944.
