The Cross was instituted on 4 July 1913 and awarded to non-commissioned officers and other ranks for long service. The first class, as in this example, was for 15 years’ service, the second class for 12 years’ and the third class for 9 years’ service in the Prussian Army. The award was suppressed on 1 February 1920
