Germany - Imperial: Rare German related Great War “Trench Art” in the form of a decent sized carved piece of chalk, probably carved from a piece that was picked up at the front, and depicting a memorial tablet with two Belgian coins inserted and two bullet heads, the faint name of someone inscribed on the base, giving location and date, the whole inserted into a ‘Feldpostbrief’ (Field Post Letter’ card box, and with two letters written on 23rd March 1915 and 13th May 1915 respectively, one clearly must be giving details of the object, though they appear to be in different hands and the carved object may well have been then sent on as a keepsake in memory of a dead soldier. The sending box, gives the details of the sender: Josef Caratiola Hilfschaffner, the address being in Schaerbeek, Belgium, and sent to Musketier Johann Blank, of the 3rd Company, 1st Battalion, 65th Infantry Regiment, 15th Division, 8th Army Corps.
Condition: fair condition.
