The Hesse-Darmstadt Campaign Decoration, also known as the Felddienstzeichen, was awarded between 1840 and 1866. It is made of gilded bronze and is 31.47 mm in diameter and weighs 18.7 grams. The decoration is suspended from a ribbon and has a monogram of Grand Duke Ludwig II on the obverse, surrounded by a laurel and oak leaf wreath. The inscription "GESTIFTET AM 14. JUNI 1840" ("INSTITUTED ON 14TH JUNE 1840") appears above the monogram, and the reverse is inscribed with "FÜR TREUEN DIENST IM KRIEGE" ("FOR FAITHFUL SERVICE IN WAR")
