The Bavarian Order of Military Merit was instituted in 1866 in 5 Classes. In 1905 the Cross of Military Merit was revised initially to 2 Classes and in 1913 to 3 classes. Each class was awarded according to the rank of the recipient . It could be issued with or without swords (for peacetime or wartime period) and crown (for a 2nd award).
The WW1 "Marine Cross" (or "Flanders Cross") was instituted in 1921 as an unofficial veterans award. Just like the majority of the Veteran awards of the Weimar Republic, only the diploma was actually issued. The Cross and the respective clasps had to be purchased privately by the recipients. Only roughly 30.000 Crosses were authorized.
