German South West Africa 1914-1915 Star trio awarded to Able Seaman, later Chief Engine Room Artificer T.A. Manser, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, South African Division who was mentioned in a submission relating to the work of retubing the main condensers of H.M.S. Goliath in February 1915.

Thomas Arundel Manser was born in Hampstead Heath, London and enlisted into the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, South African Division on 25th September 1915 giving his trade as a Fitter. He would initially serve as an Able Seaman before being promoted to Engine Room Artificer. He saw service in German South West Africa.
He had been noted in a submission made by the Chief Engineer A.W. Littlewood, at H.M. Naval Dockyard, Simonstown on 22nd February 1915 which read:
‘With reference to the work of retubing the main condensers of H.M.S. Goliath, a satisfactory water-pressure test was carried out on the 15th instance, the condensers were subsequently closed up and flooded an no leaks were discovered.
A party of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve men, lent to the Dockyard, were entrusted with this work, being employed in day and night shifts. They all displayed considerable zeal and carried out their duties in a very satisfactory manner. The services thus rendered by these men are, I consider, deserving official recognition, and I beg to submit their respective names for your favourable consideration…’, the list including T.A. Manser.
