Charles Arthur Fawcett Sheppard was born in Fort Beaufort, Cape Province and would be working as a Clerk in the Telephone Traffic Branch of the General Post Office when he enlisted in to the Wireless Section of the Divisional Company at the outset of the campaign in German East Africa, obviously reaching the operational area before 31st December 1915 and thus earning entitlement to a 1914-1915 Star.
During the next 30 months he would tours of duty in East Africa and Nyasaland. Conditions for wireless communications were difficult in this region due to geographical constraints such as high mountains interfering with signals.
Sheppard would be promoted to Lieutenant in September 1917 and would be Mentioned in Despatches in the London Gazette of 6th June 1918 for his distinguished service in the period May to December 1917. He would be released from service as from 24th July 1918.
