Henry Patterson was born in Bedlington, Northumberland in 1894. He was living at Boathouse Terrace, Cambois in 1901, the 1911 census shows him still at the same address and would enlist at Blyth, subsequently seeing service as a Private (No. 25-1207) with the 25th (2nd Tyneside Irish) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers on the Western Front. He would be killed in action on 1st July 1916 – the First Day of the Battle of the Somme, having no known grave he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.
25th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers was involved in the attack on La Boiselle on 1st July 1916, many were shot before they even reached the British front line having been met by well-prepared German defences which were situated on high ground giving them good vision over ‘Mash Valley’ which the Tyneside Irish attacked along. 509 men of the 25th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers were casualties on 1st July 1916.
