Arthur Charles Carpenter was born in Exeter and having enlisted saw service as a Private (No. 9147) with the 2nd Battalion, Devonshire Regiment and served on the Western Front from 6th November 1914 and was killed in action on 1st July 1916 – the First Day of the Battle of the Somme. Having no known grave he is now remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.
The 2nd Battalion, Devonshire Regiment suffered 11 officers and 211 men killed or missing and 5 officers and 194 men wounded on the 1st July 1916 whilst attacking the German positions around Ovillers.
