Medal of the Patriot Refugees 1936-1941, with three palms, dated 1929, 1930 and 1931, made by Mappin & Webb Ltd of London. Circular bronze medal with loop suspension; the face with a portrait of Emperor Haile Selassie I in military uniform within a circle above a Trinity star and inscribed in Amharic ‘The star led them’ and dated ‘1935’; the reverse with the Amharic inscription ‘Hope established in faith is a proven instrument of victory’.
The Medal for the Patriot Refugees was created by Emperor Haile Selassie I for those Ethiopians who were forced from their country by the Italian invasion and occupation of 1935 to 1941 and who worked to reduce the suffering of their fellows and to restore their country’s independence.
