Issued to those who took part in any one of a series of actions against the Kenyan coastal Arabs under the leader Mbaruk. A naval force under the command of Admiral Rawson was despatched to Mbaruk’s stronghold at M’wele. Following its capture, Arab dominance of the Kenyan coast was effectively ended.

Condition: Nearly Extyremely Fine

No separate clasp was issued for the operations but M’wele 1895 was usually impressed on the edge of naval medals. ‘Mwele 1895-6’ was generally engraved or occasionally impressed on medals to some Indian or African units and in script on medals to most Indian personnel. East and West Africa Medals 1887-1900 already issued could be sent back for ‘M’wele’ to be added which may explains of M’wele and date naming are found split to the left and right of the suspension claw. Bronze medals were also issue for these operations.
