Some 4880 awards of the Distinguished Service Order were made during the period covered by the GVI 1st type cypher, namely 1939-1948.

Intended to reward commissioned officers below field rank for distinguished service in time of war, and for which the Victoria Cross would not be appropriate. Previously the Companion of the Order of the Bath had sometimes been awarded to junior officers, although intended mainly for those of field rank. It is available to officers in all branches of the armed services.
