Distinguished Flying Cross, GVR cypher, complete with the very rare original 1st type (June 1918 to June 1919) issue horizontal ribbon affixed to wearing pin and as issued, and housed in its John Pinches fitted presentation case, this of Great War period manufacture with the solid hinge and clasp. One of only 1100 awards made for the period 1918-1920, with only a very limited number being issued with the 1st type ribbon that came was replaced by diagonal stripes in June 1919, after which most awards had the ribbon changed.
Condition: Nearly Extremely Fine, the case only lightly scuffed in places.
Only 1100 awards of the Distinguished Flying Cross were given to members of the Royal Air Force and Australian Flying Corps during the Great War, and between 1920 to 1936 a further 130 awards were made. The GVR cypher awards issued during the reign of King George V in the period from 1918 through to 1936, are of considerable rarity.
