The Order of the Dannebrog (Order of the Flag of the Danes) is believed to have been founded by King Waldemar II in 1219 and reactivated by King Christian V of Denmark on 1st December 1693. This is one of the oldest orders still in existence and is held in very high esteem. It is awarded for outstanding service, military or civil, to Danes and Foreigners and is rarely bestowed. The order is returnable on the death of the recipient, hence relatively few awards appear on the market.
