James Singer initially served in the ranks of the Rifle Brigade and was commissioned as an Ensign on 5th November 1854, and then appointed Lieutenant on 29th December 1854, he would see service in the Crimea and was present in action at the Battle of Alma on 20th September 1854, at the Battle of Inkermann on 5th November 1854 and in the siege of Sebastopol which began on 11th September 1854. He would be promoted Captain on 30th April 1858 and would also be awarded the Turkish Order of Medjidie 5th Class.
