Joseph Charles Picking saw service as a Private (No. 17557, later No. 23166) with the 13th (Service) Battalion, and later with 11th (Service) Battalion, Essex Regiment who saw service on the Western Front from 17th November 1915 and who was later killed in action on 22nd April 1917 and who having no known grave is now remembered on the Loos Memorial. He is noted as the son of the late Arthur William and Mary Ellen Alice Picking.
