Instituted on 10 May 1938 and intended for reward to all ranks of the police throughout the Empire for acts of conspicuous bravery or meritorious service. The number to be issued was limited to 150 in any one year. One 450 were awarded for gallantry (with nine second award bars), whilst almost 3000 were issued for meritorious service. As of June 14, 2012, the medal was renamed the Overseas Territories Police Medal. These medals were often sent to the local issuing authority unnamed, therefore awards appear unnamed, and also engraved on the rim in a variety of styles.
