Casualty East and West Africa Medal 1887-1900, 1 Clasp: 1891-2 awarded to Private J. Richards, 2nd Battalion, West India Regiment who saw service in at least one of a series of expeditions in Gambia against Chief Fodeh Cabbah between 29th December 1891 and 5th February 1892. In early 1891 he attacked and wounded several members of the Anglo-French Boundary Commission who were passing through his territory. The resulting punitive expeditions were not entirely successful. He had earlier been slightly wounded in the hand on 17th April 1891.

Joseph Richards was born in Balaclava, Manchester, Jamaica and enlisted for the West India Regiment on the 8th Septemebr 1888, aged 19 years old, giving his trade as a labourer. He would go on to serve in the West Indies from 8th August 1888 to 1st November 1888, West Africa from 2nd November 1888 to 20th February 1892 during which he time he would be slightly wounded in the hand on 17th April 1891 and would serve in at least one of a series of expeditions in Gambia against Chief Fodeh Cabbah between 29th December 1891 and 5th February 1892. In early 1891 he attacked and wounded several members of the Anglo-French Boundary Commission who were passing through his territory. The resulting punitive expeditions were not entirely successful.
West Indies from 21st February 1892 to 21st December 1894, West Africa from 22nd December 1894 to 10th December 1896. West Indies 8th January 1897 to 16th February 1897 when he was medically discharged, having been infected with Tuberculosis.
