Casualty Boer War pair awarded to Private R. Brough, 2nd Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment who saw service in South Africa during the Boer War where he would be present on operations in the Orange Free State and Transvaal, as well as the actions of Tugela Heights between 14th and 27th February 1900 in the Relief of Ladysmith between 15th Decemebr 1899 and 28th February 1900 and at Laing’s Nek between 2nd and 9th June 1900. He would be severely wounded at Holland on 19th December 1901 and would subsequently be discharged as permanently unfit for further service.

Robert Henry Brough was born in St. Marys, Nottingham and giving his trade as a French Polisher attested at Derby on 4th February 1896. He initially served at home in the UK before travelling to South Africa on 20th October 1899 where he would see service in South Africa during the Boer War.
Serving as a Private (No. 4598) with the 2nd Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment he would be present on operations in the Orange Free State and the Transvaal, and the action of the Tugela Heights between 14th and 27th February 1900, in the relief of Ladysmith between 15th December 1899 and 28th February 1900, and at the action at Laing's Nek between 2nd and 9th June 1900. He would be severely wounded at Holland in South Africa on 19th December 1901 and would return to the UK on 4th April 1902, subsequently being discharged as permanently unfit for further service.
