William John Godwin was born in Clapham, London, and was living in Tolworth, Surrey, when he enlisted at Kingston-on-Thames and then service as a Rifleman (No.R-9450) with the King’s Royal Rifles Corps, and as an Acting Corporal later Corporal (No.5507) then saw active service with the Machine Gun Corps. Present out on the Western Front with the 68th Machine Gun Company, he was killed in action during the Battle of the Somme on 23rd September 1916. Having no known grave he is commemorated by name on the Thiepval Memorial. Additionally entitled to the Victory Medal.
