Marcus Morris was born in 1895, quite possibly in the United States of America at Boston in Massachusetts, and of Jewish denomination, having somehow ended up in the United Kingdom at Manchester, was then educated at the Manchester Jewish School from 1899 through to circa 1908.

Morris saw service during the Great War initially as a Sergeant (No.250216) with the 2nd/6th Battalion, Manchester Regiment, Territorial Force, and was then posted to the 7th Officer Cadet Battalion and commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant into the Royal Fusiliers on 30th July 1918. He never saw active service as an officer, but claimed his medals in June 1924 when living in Hightown, Manchester.
