British War Medal 1914-1919, awarded to Private J.W.R. Robertson, Royal Army Medical Corps, later Essex Regiment from August 1918, who originally saw active service in East Africa from 16th March 1915, where he was awarded a Mention in Despatches for gallant and distinguished service in the London Gazette for 20th June 1916. He transferred to the 1st/7th Battalion, Essex Regiment in August 1918 for service in Egypt.

John William Reader Robertson was born in 1893 in Hackney, London, and having worked as a clerk, then enlisted into the British Army in London on 20th October 1914, joining as a Private (No.43167) the Royal Army Medical Corps. Posted out to East Africa from 16th March 1915, he was awarded a Mention in Despatches for gallant and distinguished service in the London Gazette for 20th June 1916.

Robertson then transferred as a Private (No.45415) to the Essex Regiment in August 1918 for service with the 1st/7th Battalion in Egypt, before being discharged on 6th May 1919
