Emmanuel Joseph James Peter Hale was born in Mechlin, Belgium and would attest at London on 19th July 1894 subsequently see service as a Private (No. 4224) with the West Riding Regiment. He would initially serve at home until on 27th May 1895 he would travel to South Africa, where he would serve in the 1896 operations in Rhodesia, being 1 of 270 men of the 2nd Battalion, West Riding Regiment to do so.
Hale would be promoted to Corporal on 2nd March 1897 returning to South Africa on 5th January 1898, having shortly before been convicted of embezzlement by a district court martial for embezzlement. Having returned to the UK on 6th January 1898 he would be discharged on 23rd June 1903.
