Evan James Coventon was born in Lympstone, Devon, and having worked as a gardener, then enlisted into the British Army Territorial Force on 17th April 1908 as a Gunner (No.46 later No.865003) with the Royal Field Artillery as a member of the 4th Brigade Wessex Division, he having previously been a member of the Volunteer Force, and was then awarded the Territorial Force Efficiency Medal in Army Order No.9 of 1912. He is one of only 17 GVR bust TFEM’s to the unit.

Coventon then saw service during the Great War out in India. before being discharged due to sickness on 12th March 1919 and awarded the Silver War Badge. Coventon was awarded the Territorial Force War Medal in Army Order No.143 of 1920 and is also entitled to the British War Medal.
