Provenance: Ex John Tamplin Collection.

Maurice Leopold Chavez was from British Honduras in Central America, and joined as a Private (No.26) the British Honduras Defence Force in the 1930’s.

Promoted to Sergeant, Chavez was awarded the Efficiency Medal in the British Honduras Government Gazette for 7th December 1940, one of five men so decorated in this gazette. Issued with a Territorial suspension, the reason for this according to the late John Tamplin, is that the Efficiency Medal with British Honduras suspender had not been struck on that time, despite being authorised in the Annual Report of the Royal Mint of 1935 and 1936, published in 1937.

Chavez saw service during the Second World War with the British Honduras Volunteer Guard as a Sergeant, and was awarded the War Medal 1939-1945 in the British Honduras Government Gazette of 13th August 1949. After the war, Chavez saw service as a Chief Officer with the Colonial Prison Service in British Honduras, and was awarded the Colonial Prison Service Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in the British Honduras Gazette of 11th May 1957. His combination of awards is exceptionally rare.
