Thomas Duncan was born in Dingwall, Ross-shire, Scotland, and having worked as a draper, then attested for service with the British Army at Aberdeen on 15th January 1892, joining as a Private (No.4951) the Gordon Highlanders. Posted to the 1st Battalion, he saw service out in India from 28th February 1896, and was present out on the Punjab Frontier and with the Tirah Field Force during 1897 to 1898.

Later seeing service in South Africa from 24th September 1899 and present during the Boer War, he was present in action at Elandslaagte, the Defence of Ladysmith, Laing’s Nek, and Belfast. Posted back to India from 2nd January 1902, he was posted home from 23rd January 1906, and discharged three days later.
