Awarded to Private (No.2715) J. Hammond, 2nd Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment, who saw service during the Boer War in South Africa, and was wounded in action at Monte Cristo on 18th February 1900, when in action against Boers entrenched onto a hilltop known as Green Hill some 10 kilometres north-east of Colenso. The 2nd West Yorks and the 2nd Royal West Surrey’s forced the Boers out of their trenches on the southern most part of the ridge.
