William Ward served as a Private (No.1421) with the 1st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers during the operations on the North West Frontier which lasted from 14th February to 31st May 1908.
Ward subsequently saw service during the Great War with the 1st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers on the Western Front with the British Expeditionary Force from 13th August 1914. Ward however deserted on 14th February 1915, and subsequently forfeited his entitlement to the 1914 Star trio which was not issued to him.
