Amos Tansley was born in Cottingham, Northamptonshire, and having worked as a labourer, was living in Leicester, when he attested for the British Army Militia on 13th March 1880, joining as a Private the Leicestershire Regiment of Militia. Tansley subsequently went on to see service as a Private (No.2617) with the 2nd Battalion, Derbyshire Regiment, and was present during the Egyptian War of 1882.
