Murtagh, 1st Battalion, King’s Royal Rifle Corps, later Sapper, Royal Engineers who saw service in South Africa during the Boer War where he would take part in the battle of Talana on 20th October 1899, before being present during the defence of Ladysmith from 3rd November 1899 through to 28th February 1900 and in the action at Laing’s Nek from 2nd to 9th June 1900, also being present during the operations in Transvaal, he would later see Great War service with the Royal Engineers.

Murtagh saw service as a Private (No. 1157) with 1st Battalion, The King’s Royal Rifle Corps in South Africa during the Boer War where he would take part in the battle of Talana on 20th October 1899, before being present during the defence of Ladysmith from 3rd November 1899 through to 28th February 1900 and in the action at Laing’s Nek from 2nd to 9th June 1900, also being present during the operations in Transvaal.
He would later see service as a Sapper (No. 442454) with the Royal Engineers during the Great War.
