Frederick Harris was born in Worcester and giving his trade as a shopman enlisted at London on 9th May 1898, he remained at home in the UK, until he travelled to South Africa with 2nd Battalion, East Kent Regiment – the Buffs on 9th January 1900 before returning to the UK on 15th June 1900. He once again travelled to South Africa on 1st September 1901 and remained there until 27th October 1902 taking part in operations in Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal during the Boer War. He is noted as Mounted Infantry on the roll for the QSA. He returned to the UK on 28th October 1902 and remained serving there until his discharge on 1st May 1910.
