John Thomson was born near Aberdeen and attested on 1st June 1898 seeing serving at home until 5th September 1898 when he travelled to the East Indis. He would remain in the East Indies until he travelled to South Africa on 24th September 1899, subsequently taking part in the Boer War where he would serve with the Gordon Highlanders taking part in the operations taking part in the Defence of Ladysmith between 3rd November 1899 and 28th February 1900, as well as in action at Laing’s Nek on 2nd to 9th June 1900 and Belfast on 26th to 27th August 1900.
He would travel to the East Indies on 2nd January 1902 where he would remain until 23rd March 1904, before travelling home and being discharged on 29th June 1904.
