James Orr was born in Carluke, Lanarkshire in 1879 and enlisted aged 19 in 1898 subsequently seeing service with the 1st Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers in South Africa during the Boer War where having arrived on 4th January 1900 he would take part in operations in Cape Colony as well as in the actions at Paardeberg and Johannesburg. He would return to the UK on 17th February 1903 and be discharged on 4th April 1914 after 16 years service.
