Boer War pair awarded to Private J. Humphreys, 3rd Battalion, later 2nd Battalion, East Kent Regiment – the Buffs who saw service in South Africa during the Boer War on operations in Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal.

Josiah Humphreys was born in Croydon, Surrey and enlisted at Tonbridge on 19th April 1899 giving his trade as a labourer. He would be posted to the 2nd Battalion, East Kent Regiment – the Buffs on 22nd August 1899 before being attached to the 3rd Battalion on 9th June 1900 arriving in South Africa on this date. Posted once more the 2nd Battalion on 30th November 1900 completing his service in South Africa during the Boer War where he took part in operations in Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal.
He then transferred to the 1st Battalion on 21st March 1902 with whom he travelled to India then being present in Burma from 23rd April 1902 until 11th December 1902 when he returned home before being discharged medically unfit on 24th February 1903.
